Cool Tool! Estimating Wind Energy Potential at a Particular Location

The In My Backyard (IMBY) tool from NREL enables anyone to estimate how much electricity could be produced through solar or wind power in their own backyard. This tool uses Google Earth and all you need is an address to get started!

Once you specify one or more locations for either 3KW or 10KW wind turbines at a specified height, the tool calculates wind resource potential and estimated electricity output by month.  Data is shown graphically or it can be exported into an excel spreadsheet.  Your students would have fun with a homework assignment where they analyze their home or a local farm or business for wind potential.
