Lesson: Fueling the Future: Evaluating the Sustainability of Biofuels

Are you having a hard time keeping up with the various kinds of biofuels and the pros and cons of each?  In this lesson, students assess the sustainability of different biofuels by evaluating how the life cycle (production, transport, and use) of each feedstock impacts the economy, the environment, and society. This new lesson from UNC’s Environmental Resource Program has been reviewed by local biofuel experts and successfully piloted by science teachers from across the state.

This activity is a good introduction to the variety of biofuels that in use today And the future if you include algae!) As the students research the different biofuels, they begin to form their own opinions about the fuel source. After they present their findings to their classmates, a good discussion inevitably follows. This is a good lesson for learning not only about biofuels, but it is a good lesson to get the students talking about the topic and their lives.
