EPA’s Power Profiler

EPA’s Power Profiler is an easy-to-use online application that can be used to show that a variety of energy sources are used to generate electricity and that currently much of society’s energy comes from non-renewable fossil fuels and nuclear energy;  it also reveals the air emissions profile associated with a particular fuel mix.  By entering a zip code and selecting a utility, Power Profiler will display information about the generation of electricity in the corresponding eGRID subregion.  Using Power Profiler,  students can review the fuel mix for their region.

Your students may have fun comparing their region’s power profile with that of other regions in the country (e.g., more hydropower, 98101(Seattle); predominantly coal, 24701 (WV); gas, 79603 (TX)).
